Read it. Move it. Hit the mark.

Bull's-Eye turns short vowel reading practice into a target-chasing race. Players draw a card, read the word, and move their marker along the numbered track — the goal is to land exactly on 13 for a bull's-eye. Overshoot it and you're subtracting your way back. It's simple enough for early readers and tense enough to keep everyone locked in.

With 164 cards across two carefully designed decks, Bull's-Eye covers all five short vowels with enough variety to keep sessions fresh for months.

What's Inside the Bag:

  • 164 word cards across two decks:
    • Real Words deck — CVC words across all short vowels
    • Detached Syllables deck — phonetically decodable syllables that aren't standalone words, but each one can become a real word by adding another syllable (e.g., sansandal, pilpillow). A word list of possibilities is printed for each card so you're never left guessing.
  • Game board — numbered track 1–18 with the bull's-eye at 13, color-coded move-forward (pink) and subtract-back (blue) zones
  • Canvas drawstring storage bag — keeps both decks and the board together and grab-ready
  • Instruction sheet — standard rules, a built-in challenge game variation, and additional game ideas to extend how you use the decks

How to Play:

→ Draw a card → Read the word or syllable correctly → Move your marker forward by the number shown → If you land before 13, keep adding → Land exactly on 13 and it's a bull's-eye! → Overshoot past 13 and you subtract back toward it → Keep playing until someone hits 13 exactly.

The numbers 1-6 on each card mean every move matters — small gains, big tension, and a finish line that takes real persistence to hit.

Why the Detached Syllables Deck Is a Game-Changer:

Nonsense syllable reading is a cornerstone of structured literacy assessment and instruction — it shows whether a student can truly decode, not just memorize. But Bull's-Eye goes a step further: every detached syllable in this deck can grow into a real word with an added syllable. That means the game naturally opens the door to vocabulary conversation, syllable segmentation, and morphology work, all without leaving the game.

Each card comes with a printed word list of real words that contain that syllable, so tutors, teachers, and parents always have a prompt ready.

164 Cards Means Serious Staying Power:

  • Full short vowel coverage — a, e, i, o, u — across both decks
  • Two completely different levels of decoding challenge in one game
  • Enough cards to rotate through for an entire school year without repetition fatigue
  • Use the decks separately for targeted practice or shuffle them together for a mixed challenge
  • Multiple game formats included — standard play, the challenge variation, and additional ideas — so the same 164 cards serve a wide range of learners and settings

Perfect For:

  • Orton-Gillingham and structured literacy programs
  • CVC and short vowel intervention
  • Nonsense word fluency practice (DIBELS prep)
  • Small group and 1:1 tutoring
  • Homeschool phonics instruction
  • Classroom word work centers
